Monday has been a big day for RIM. Amidst the introduction of a pair of new BlackBerry phones, RIM announced in conjunction with Wikitude that the Wikitude augmented reality browser would soon be making its way to RIM’s phones.
Wikitude will take advantage of the compass built-in into the BlackBerry Bold 9900 and 9930. Via the browser, users will be able to point their phones at a location and see an overlay of information based on what the phones’ camera picks up. Wikitude says it currently has over 150 geo-referenced locations gleaned from services like Wikipedia and YouTube. The browser will also be integrated with BlackBerry messenger, allowing users to share information with other BlackBerry users.
The Wikitude World Browser will be built into the new BlackBerry Bold 9900 and 9930 phones when they arrive later this year. The application is already available for iOS and Android.
